Under the patronage of the President of the Southern Technical University, Professor Dr. Adnan Abdullah Ateeq, the esteemed The Center for Continuing Education at Southern Technical University held a scientific workshop entitled: "The effect of sulfur and heavy metals from gas associated with oil on soil and wheat and barley productivity in northern Basra" . The workshop was held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, and was presented by Professor Dr. Mohsen Abdel-Hay. The workshop aimed to shed light on the negative environmental impact of gas associated with oil, including the effect of sulfur and heavy metals that this gas secretes on the soil, and how these factors can affect the productivity of agricultural crops such as wheat and barley in areas north of Basra. The results of scientific studies were presented, aiming to find scientific and practical solutions to reduce the effects of these pollutants on the environment and agricultural crops in the region. This workshop comes within the framework of Southern Technical University’s ongoing efforts to enhance scientific and environmental awareness, and stimulate scientific research on pressing environmental issues in the region. The workshop was attended by a number of academics, researchers, and those interested in the environmental and agricultural field, where the dimensions of the topic were discussed and ideas and experiences were exchanged.
